Make sure your pruning tools are clean and sharp.

Most standard climbing roses are the exception to this rule. They typically bloom on old wood, so cutting them back in early spring would cut off new blooms.

They should be pruned just after the flowers finish, although you can remove dead or unwanted branches at anytime. In the summer, prune rose bushes to remove dead or diseased branches. While planting new bare root plants, don’t trim the shoots, but trim the roots only. The following spring, shorten the flowered laterals to four or five buds while the plant is still dormant. If you are pruning an established climber, prune the flowered laterals in the Estimated Reading Time: 5 mins. These roses tend to bloom on old wood.

It’s fine to remove winter-killed branches or otherwise damaged wood early in the year, but defer your annual pruning until summer, after the peak of bloom. Prune to remove undesirable canes and to shape and train growth. Side branches tend to flower more heavily than central leaders. Sep 17, Allow large shrubs to remain large. Many shrub roses bloom on shoots emerging from old wood, so you can't cut back old wood in the spring without sacrificing blooms.

When these plants need pruning, do so little by little. Trim out just a few canes in the spring. And then throughout the year, prune whatever is necessary to maintain the plant's shape. Dead head (remove spent blooms) the climbing rose while it is in bloom. Use a sharp pair of pruning shears to snip off the dying flower. This encourages the plant to continue producing new roses.

Mar 22, The method I prefer to use for deadheading roses is to prune the old blooms off down to the first 5-leaf junction with the cane at a slight angle leaving approximately 3/16 to 1/4 of an inch ( cm.) above that junction. The amount of cane left above the 5-leaf junction helps support the new growth and future bloom (s).
